The Good German
Warner Bros.2005
Huntington Gallery Interiors (Large Drawing Room, Dining Room, Main Hall), HUG Circle
In the fall of 2005, the Huntington Gallery was closed to the public and the art objects were removed so restoration of the building could begin. In the brief window of time between closure of the gallery and the beginning of construction, three productions were permitted to film inside the gallery—something which had always been completely impossible when the building was still open and full of artworks. “The Good German” was the first and only feature (the other two productions were episodes of the TV series “Nip/Tuck” and “E-Ring”). The large drawing room, the dining room and the main hallway were transformed into rooms in a German mansion, post World War II; a party and several discussion scenes took place between George Clooney, Beau Bridges, Leland Orser and others. Some scenes were also shot in front of the building.

The crew films a scene on the driveway, out the window of the former Art Library, now remodeled into gallery space.
The Large Drawing Room portrayed the colonel's office in this scene between George Clooney ("Jake Geismer") and Beau Bridges ("Colonel Muller").
The 18th century chandelier in the Dining Room was (carefully) fitted with battery operated candles, and it's featured in the opening of this party scene. The rest of the set dressing was brought in by the production company.
